Meet Of The Sea: Murkani’s Latest Collection

There’s a certain kind of reset that only the ocean can offer. Salt on your skin, sand beneath your feet, the breeze in your hair – and suddenly, everything feels a little lighter.

It’s this feeling of renewal that sits at the heart of Of The Sea, the latest collection from Australian jewellery designer Murkani. Inspired by the ebb and flow of the waves and the restorative energy of the ocean, the collection explores the beauty of nature through organic forms, luminous pearls and delicate ocean-inspired motifs.

For designer Kiralee the sea represents more than a beautiful setting. It’s a feeling.

“You can take a dip in the ocean and it can reset everything. You can feel new again.”

Inspired by Nature

Nature has always been central to Murkani’s approach to jewellery, and Of The Sea draws inspiration from some of the ocean’s most beautiful details. At the centre of the collection is the paper nautilus shell, its naturally matt texture and undulating ridges translated into an intricate design motif that appears throughout the collection.

There’s something beautifully imperfect about the forms found in nature – shapes that are organic, tactile and never quite the same. Of The Sea captures this quality through fluid silhouettes and considered details that feel discovered rather than constructed. Fish appear to swim across necklaces and earrings, while moving chains and elongated pearl designs create a sense of movement throughout the collection.

The result is jewellery that feels alive.

A Softer Side of Statement Jewellery

There’s a distinctly romantic quality to Of The Sea, balanced with the relaxed spirit of a coastal escape. Whimsical motifs sit alongside natural pearls, delicate chains and sculptural metalwork, creating pieces that can be worn individually or layered with existing Murkani favourites.

This versatility is central to the collection. Kiralee describes Of The Sea as a natural extension of the Murkani aesthetic – feminine and symbolic, with a relaxed bohemian edge. It’s jewellery designed for collecting, layering and making your own.

A classic chain paired with an ocean-inspired pendant. A statement earring worn with everyday pieces. Pearls mixed with polished metal. Nothing feels too precious. Everything feels personal.

Pearls, In Their Most Natural Form

Pearls become one of the defining elements of Of The Sea, chosen for their organic shapes and natural individuality. Rather than looking for uniformity, Kiralee embraces the beauty of variation, working with Baroque, Keshi and Biwa pearls throughout the collection.

Each brings its own character.

Baroque pearls celebrate their irregular, one-of-a-kind forms, while elongated Biwa pearls introduce a sense of fluidity. Delicate Keshi pearls add subtle texture and softness.

Together, they create a collection that feels naturally layered – much like the ocean itself. The pearls sit alongside white topaz, polished metal and sculptural forms, creating a balance between softness and structure.

From a Story to Something You Can Wear

For Kiralee, designing begins long before the first sample.

“I collect ideas, I tell little stories in my head, I research the history… I try to find ideas that I find interesting that I can bring out in the jewellery.”

Those ideas become sketches before evolving into detailed 3D drawings and, eventually, finished jewellery. It’s a process of collecting inspiration and allowing it to take shape – a little like the collection itself. The result is jewellery with a story behind it, but enough freedom for the wearer to create their own.

The Piece Kiralee Can't Stop Wearing

Among the collection’s many standout designs, the Fish & Pearl Long Earrings have become a personal favourite for Kiralee.

Combining the paper nautilus shell, a delicate fish motif, natural pearls and white topaz, the earrings bring together the key elements of Of The Sea in one statement design.

“I am finding myself wearing them to work every day as well as to events.”

Perhaps that’s what makes them so appealing – they capture the spirit of the collection without feeling reserved for a particular moment.

A Mediterranean State of Mind

If Of The Sea were a place, Kiralee imagines it as a Mediterranean resort by the ocean. Sun-warmed skin. Clear blue water. Long, slow afternoons. The feeling of having nowhere else to be.

It’s a fitting image for a collection created around the idea of pressing pause and reconnecting with what surrounds us. Ultimately, Of The Sea is a celebration of connection, resilience and renewal. A reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a little time in nature to feel refreshed again.
