Jewellery Care Guide

We pride ourselves in offering you the best range of eclectic quality jewellery. The quality of our pieces means that they are made to last if they are taken care of. We recommend following our best tips below in caring for you jewellery to maintain their exquisite lustre & quality.

Everyday Wear
Be sure to take care when wearing your fave jewellery pieces throughout the day. Without notice your jewellery can get caught on clothing, accessories and items you come into contact with. Remember the golden rule of Last On, First Off. Your jewellery should be put on last when dressing and taken off first.

Care
Ensure to remove your jewellery before sleeping, bathing, swimming or exercising to avoid damage and/or significant tarnishing to your beloved pieces. Also be weary of where you spray your perfume and hairspray. Silver is a malleable (soft) metal; so, be gentle with earring posts, clasps etc as they can bend or break under excessive force. Gemstones can also scratch, crack, or chip if dropped.

Storage
Your jewellery should be stored individually in a safe, dry & cool place to prevent from tarnishing, discolouration, tangling and scratches.

Repair
Should your jewellery ever become damaged or heavily tarnished, please feel comfortable to head into your nearest SILVERSHOP store or contact us here. We provide a cleaning and repair service for all our pieces, usually at a minimal cost.

Cleaning
Due to a natural reaction to chemicals in the atmosphere, heat and body oils, sterling silver can tarnish and oxidise. Discolouration can usually be removed by gentle rubbing with a good quality jewellery cleaning cloth. For an amazing cleaning at home service, check out our Silver Care Kit here.

SPECIFIC JEWELLERY CARE

Some SILVERSHOP pieces require more care than others and it is important that you know how to take care of these special pieces. Below are specific care guidelines for different materials and shapes.

Usually suitable for everyday wear unless it is a fragile design. Can be cleaned with a silver cleaning cloth - more difficult tarnishing may require a professional polish (We offer this service for a small fee).

Suitable for occasional wear only. Gently clean with a soft cloth (do not rub vigorously) or use warm soapy water.

Can be suitable for everyday wear but depends on design - pave jewellery for example, is more suited to occasional wear.

Please be super careful when opening huggie earrings.  Huggie earrings release at the point at the back of your ear. To release the post, gently use your nail to press down on the post where it connects to the back of the huggie.  Do not try to force the huggie open by pulling the front of the huggie away from the back, this will cause damage to the post and hinge.

Suitable for occasional wear only. Direct exposure to cosmetics and cleaning agents may affect lustre and colour. Clean with a silver cloth or warm soapy water.

Suitable for occasional wear only. Do not drop or knock resin jewellery. Clean with warm soapy water. A silver cloth can be used on silver parts.

Usually suitable for everyday wear unless it is a fragile design. Best to clean oxidised silver with a soft cleaning cloth - do not use silver dip as this will remove the oxidisation.

Electroformed silver dents more easily than cast or stamped silver. Clean with a soft cleaning cloth - do not use silver dip as electroformed jewellery is hollow and it is very hard to remove solution from inside.

Usually suitable for everyday wear unless it is a fragile design. Polishing cloths are not suitable for matte finished jewellery.
